How to Choose a Watch for Everyday Wear

The one watch you'll actually wear

A good everyday watch is versatile: smart enough for work, relaxed enough for the weekend, and comfortable enough that you forget you're wearing it. You don't need a collection — you need one watch that does most things well. Here's how to choose it.

Case size and fit

Case size is measured in millimetres across the dial. As a rough guide, 34–38mm suits smaller wrists, 39–42mm is a versatile middle ground, and 44mm and up makes a bolder statement. Just as important is how it sits: the watch shouldn't overhang the edges of your wrist. Comfort beats trends every time.

Strap material

  • Leather: Smart and classic, ideal for work and dressier occasions. Less suited to getting wet.
  • Stainless steel: Durable and polished — dresses up or down and handles daily wear well.
  • Silicone or rubber: Comfortable, sporty and water-friendly. Great if you're active.

Quick-release straps are a bonus — they let you swap the look in seconds.

Dial and readability

Keep it simple for everyday use: a clean dial with clear markers is easy to read at a glance. Neutral colours (white, black, navy, silver) go with almost anything. Extra complications like date windows and sub-dials can be handy but add clutter — choose what you'll actually use.

Water resistance

Look for at least 3 ATM (30m) so a splash or rain won't be a problem. If you want to swim in it, aim for 5 ATM or more. Everyday water resistance saves a lot of worry.
