Why UK homes get damp — and why it matters
If you're waking up to condensation on the windows, a musty smell in the wardrobe or black spots creeping across the bathroom ceiling, you're not alone. British homes are especially prone to damp: cooler temperatures, plenty of rain and increasingly airtight, well-insulated rooms mean moisture has nowhere to escape. Left unchecked, that moisture leads to mould, damaged plaster and paint, and air that can aggravate allergies and asthma.
A dehumidifier is the simplest fix. It quietly pulls excess moisture out of the air, protecting your home and making rooms feel warmer and fresher. The trick is choosing the right size — and that's where most people get it wrong.
How dehumidifiers are sized
Dehumidifiers are rated by how much water they can remove in 24 hours, from small “mini” units that collect a few hundred millilitres up to powerful models that extract 20+ litres a day. Bigger isn't automatically better: an oversized unit in a small room wastes energy, while an undersized one in a damp house never quite keeps up. Match the machine to the space.
Which size do you need?
- Mini dehumidifier (around 300–500ml tank): Ideal for a wardrobe, bathroom, caravan or a single small bedroom with light condensation. Whisper-quiet and cheap to run.
- Compact 1,000–1,100ml unit: A step up for a medium bedroom, home office or utility area with moderate damp.
- Mid-size (around 2 litres per day): A solid all-rounder for a busy family room, kitchen or flat with recurring condensation.
- High-capacity (10–25 litres per day): Built for whole homes, basements, new-build damp or drying laundry indoors. If several rooms are affected, this is the safer choice.
As a rule of thumb: the more people, pets, cooking, showers and indoor drying happening in a space, the more moisture you're generating — and the more capacity you'll want.
Features worth paying for
- Quiet operation: For a bedroom or nursery, look for a low decibel rating so it can run overnight.
- Auto shut-off: Stops when the tank is full so it never overflows.
- Smart app control: Set humidity targets and schedules from your phone — handy for larger units you run daily.
- Continuous drainage: On bigger models, a drain hose means you never have to empty the tank.
- Energy efficiency: Check the wattage; a low-watt unit running a few hours a day costs very little.
Where to place it for best results
Put the dehumidifier near the source of the damp — by the shower, next to drying laundry, or in the room with the worst condensation. Keep doors closed so it works on one space at a time, leave a little clearance around the vents for airflow, and empty the tank regularly (or set up continuous drainage). Running it for a few hours a day is usually enough once the initial damp is under control.

Struggling with damp in more than one room? Start one size up — you can always run a larger unit on a lower setting, but you can't ask a small one to do more than it's built for.
